Senator Ekong Sampson has underscored the centrality of grassroots political participation to Nigeria’s democratic consolidation as the All Progressives Congress (APC) conducted its Ward Congress in Ikpa Ikono Ward II, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The lawmaker, who represents Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, spoke at the ward centre in Iffe Town during the congress, commending party members for what he described as a peaceful and transparent exercise. He emphasized that credible leadership selection at the ward level remains the foundation of internal democracy and sustainable political growth.
According to him, strengthening party structures at the grassroots guarantees that governance reflects the aspirations of the people, noting that democracy must begin from the community level to be meaningful. He maintained that when ordinary citizens are actively involved in political processes, policy direction and representation at higher levels become more responsive and accountable.
Senator Sampson urged the newly elected ward executives to place unity above personal interests and focus on consolidating the party’s presence across communities. He stressed that cohesive leadership at the ward level would not only boost the APC’s electoral prospects but also improve governance outcomes in the years ahead.
The congress formed part of the APC’s nationwide efforts to reinforce its grassroots machinery ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party stakeholders in attendance expressed optimism about strengthening cohesion and expanding participation within the party.
At the end of the exercise, Mr. Moses Udonwa was returned as Ward Chairman for Ikpa Ikono Ward II.
