In a far-reaching move aimed at forestalling a looming constitutional and security crisis, the Presidency is considering the dissolution of all 774 Local Government Area (LGA) councils across the country, credible sources have confirmed.
The proposed action, described by insiders as an extraordinary but preventative measure, is being weighed against the backdrop of escalating security challenges and persistent governance failures at the grassroots level, which have increasingly threatened national stability.
Under the plan being considered, state governors would be mandated to nominate Sole Administrators to take charge of the affected LGAs. These Sole Administrators would not operate under the conventional state–local government framework but would instead report directly to the Council of State, signalling a significant restructuring of local governance oversight.
Sources within the corridors of power disclosed that the move is driven by concerns that the current structure of local councils, many of which are plagued by legitimacy disputes, fiscal opacity, and administrative paralysis, could deepen the country’s constitutional fragility if left unchecked.
While no official proclamation has yet been made, consultations are reportedly ongoing at the highest levels of government, with legal, security, and political implications being carefully examined.
Analysts note that dissolving elected local councils nationwide would be unprecedented in Nigeria’s democratic history and is likely to provoke intense debate among constitutional lawyers, civil society groups, and political stakeholders.
Supporters of the proposed measure argue that it could restore order, accountability, and coordination in local governance during a period of national strain. Critics, however, warn that it may undermine democratic principles and further centralize power.
As deliberations continue, Nigerians await a formal statement from the Presidency to clarify the scope, legality, and timeline of what could become one of the most consequential governance decisions in recent times.
