The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has issued sweeping directives aimed at tightening internal discipline and enhancing public safety across the state. The directives followed a strategic meeting held on Tuesday with senior police officers at the Command Headquarters.
Azare expressed concern over the rising disregard for the Inspector-General of Police’s order prohibiting officers from escorting unauthorized VIPs. He directed that any policeman found accompanying private individuals, politicians, or VIPs without approval from Force Headquarters be immediately arrested, disarmed, and subjected to orderly room trial. He added that Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) would be held accountable for the actions of their subordinates.
Reiterating the state government’s ban on masquerade activities, the Police Commissioner warned that such gatherings have recently resulted in violence and public disturbances. He ordered Area Commanders, DPOs, and Tactical Commanders to enforce the prohibition strictly, cautioning that negligence or compromise would attract disciplinary measures.
Azare also condemned the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media, describing it as a threat capable of inciting panic and undermining public peace. He urged officers to intensify community engagement, monitor emerging threats, and ensure that individuals involved in fabricating or circulating falsehoods are prosecuted.
Addressing broader security concerns including cultism, armed robbery, and street gang activitiesb the CP directed Tactical Units, Area Commands, and Divisions to embark on rigorous stop-and-search operations, intelligence-led raids on crime-prone areas, and sustained surveillance on suspected criminal hideouts. He emphasized that all operations must be conducted professionally and without harassment of citizens.
Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to maintaining Akwa Ibom as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria, Azare called on officers to remain disciplined, vigilant, and dedicated to their constitutional duties. He urged residents to report suspicious activities promptly and assured the public of strengthened collaboration with other security agencies.
Meanwhile, the Command has confirmed the arrest of one David Effiong, who was allegedly found parading in full masquerade regalia and causing public disturbance. Others arrested over alleged fake news fabrication and circulation include Lexis Christopher, Stephen Okwen, and 15-year-old Favour Emenyi, a student of Mary Hanney Secondary School in Oron. All suspects are being processed for court.
