The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has renewed efforts to reconcile with former Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, urging him to withdraw his court case and help stabilise the party amid mounting internal tensions.
The appeal follows Lamido’s recent interview in which he sharply criticised the PDP’s management of its leadership crisis and referenced an ongoing legal challenge he instituted against the party. His remarks drew a swift response from Umar Sani, a close ally of PDP National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), who insisted that several of Lamido’s claims were misleading.
According to Sani, Lamido’s allegation that the PDP flouted a court directive during its national convention was inaccurate. He explained that no court order stopped the party from holding the convention; rather, the court instructed the PDP to allow Lamido to participate in the leadership contest pending necessary verification—an order the party has since appealed at the Supreme Court.
Sani added that a separate court in Ibadan had explicitly authorised the party to proceed with the convention, which produced the current set of national officers. This, he said, contradicts Lamido’s assertion that the PDP presently lacks legitimate leadership.
Appealing for calm, Sani urged the former governor to prioritise the party’s collective interest over personal grievances.
“Sule Lamido is one of the founding figures of the PDP. At this critical stage, the party needs cohesion, not prolonged litigation,” he said. “If we continue to tie ourselves down with court cases, victory will keep slipping away from us.”
The PDP leadership also encouraged Lamido to close ranks with Chairman Turaki, stressing that their long-standing cordial relationship could still serve as a foundation for rebuilding unity within the party.
The renewed push for reconciliation comes as the PDP continues to battle internal disputes and rising public criticism over its handling of recent political and administrative challenges.
