The Uyo Local Government Council has initiated immediate measures to tackle the persistent flooding problem around the Atiku Abubakar Flyover in Uyo.
The move follows several complaints and an on-the-spot assessment conducted on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, by the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Dr. Uwemedimo E. Udo, who visited the affected stretch between Afaha Ube and the foot of the flyover.
Disturbed by the impact of the flooding—which has disrupted vehicular movement, damaged vehicles, weakened road surfaces, and inconvenienced nearby residents and businesses—Dr. Udo directed the Council’s Department of Works to identify the root causes of the recurring water overflow and implement immediate solutions.
As part of the intervention, the Council has commenced clearing drainage channels, desilting blocked water paths, and ensuring proper diversion of floodwater to restore free flow and prevent future overflow, particularly during heavy rainfall.
Dr. Udo emphasized that the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to maintaining safe and accessible environments across Uyo Metropolis, in alignment with the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno, Ph.D.
“We are determined to respond promptly to issues affecting our people. This intervention is not just about fixing a drainage problem, it’s about improving the quality of life and ensuring the safety of our residents,” the Council Chairman stated.
Residents and business owners within the area have expressed relief and appreciation for the Council’s swift response, describing the move as timely and impactful.
Supervising the ongoing work on-site were the Council’s Director of Works, Arc. Emmanuel Ekoh; the Dean of Supervisors/Supervisor for Works, Obong Idara Akpan; and other officials of the Department of Works.
The Council assured that more community-based interventions will follow to address environmental and infrastructural challenges across the metropolis.
