The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, fondly known as the Nest of Champions, has once again cemented its status as one of Africa’s premier football arenas following its latest endorsement by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
In CAF’s recent publication ranking top football facilities across the continent, the Nest of Champions retained its elite status as the only stadium in Nigeria approved to host international matches, reaffirming its reputation as a world-class venue.
Reacting to the announcement, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, lauded the recognition, describing it as a testament to the state government’s continuous investment in modern sports infrastructure.
“We are happy and proud that the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium the Nest of Champions has been approved and listed among the very best football facilities on the continent,” Elder Bassey said.
“We must give credit to the government of our dear state under the leadership of His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, for his unwavering commitment to ensuring that our sports infrastructure remains in top condition.”
The commissioner, who recently embarked on a statewide inspection of sports facilities, noted that the stadium had successfully hosted several high-profile events, including the Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, Rivers United’s CAF Champions League preliminary games, and the Davido “5ive Alive” Tour Concert.
With CAF’s renewed approval, the iconic stadium is set to welcome more continental football action as Rivers United prepares for the 2025/26 CAF Champions League group stage. The team will face RS Berkane of Morocco on November 30, 2025, Power Dynamos of Zambia on February 1, 2026, and Pyramids FC of Egypt on February 8, 2026.
Elder Bassey further commended Governor Umo Eno for his “consistent support and timely release of funds” dedicated to the upkeep of sports facilities in the state. He emphasized that the state’s commitment to maintaining world-class venues would continue to attract sports tourism and stimulate local economic growth.
CAF’s endorsement follows a recent round of stadium inspections and safety assessments across Africa, designed to ensure that all venues hosting international fixtures meet global standards for security, capacity, and playing conditions.
As Uyo prepares to once again welcome the continent’s football stars, the Nest of Champions stands tall a symbol of Nigeria’s growing influence in African football infrastructure.
