UYO, Akwa Ibom State is setting a new benchmark in sub-national energy reforms following the signing of the Electricity Law 2025 by Governor Umo Eno, a move that officials say will guarantee affordable and reliable electricity for residents.
Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, disclosed this during a live radio programme on Comfort FM, Uyo, where he confirmed that the state will host its maiden Electricity Summit from September 18–19, 2025.
According to Umanah, the summit will bring together key stakeholders from federal and state governments, investors, and development partners to establish a roadmap for sustainable energy development and strengthen state-level regulatory frameworks.
“The Power Summit will not just be a talk-shop. We’re bringing in top experts in the power sector, and with the signing of the Electricity Bill, Governor Eno is committed to making electricity availability and affordability a reality for citizens,” he stressed.
Beyond energy, Umanah highlighted Governor Eno’s strides in infrastructure, revealing that the administration has constructed over 771 kilometers of roads and 32 bridges within two years. He cited a recent survey that ranked Akwa Ibom as the state with the highest road projects completed in Nigeria in 2025.
On tourism, the commissioner said the administration is determined to position Akwa Ibom as the nation’s leading destination. He pointed to the December opening of the ARISE Resort and the planned upgrade of Ibom Hotels and Conference Centre as projects that will redefine the state’s hospitality and leisure sector.
Speaking on employment, Umanah reaffirmed Governor Eno’s pledge to uphold transparency in the ongoing civil service recruitment exercise, assuring applicants that the process will be merit-based, with results from computer-based tests released instantly to prevent undue influence.
He further announced that preparations have been concluded for the return of the State Sports Festival, which was last held in 2005. The event will kick off on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Uyo Sports Stadium, featuring 18 sporting activities across all 31 local government areas of the state.
“For the first time in 20 years, the State Sports Festival is back — 18 sports, 31 LGAs, one festival,” Umanah declared.
With bold energy reforms, record-breaking infrastructure projects, and renewed attention to tourism, employment, and sports, the Eno administration is positioning Akwa Ibom as a state to watch on Nigeria’s development map.
