UYO, The Akwa Ibom State Government has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a young mother and her newborn at the General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene, following a caesarean delivery.
Governor Umo Eno, in a swift response to the viral video circulating on social media about the incident, expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and directed the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, to set up a high-powered commission of inquiry. The panel, which will include both medical and legal experts, is tasked with uncovering the facts behind the tragedy and recommending preventive measures.
Acting on the Governor’s directive, Dr. John, accompanied by a team from the Ministry of Health, visited the hospital at 12:10 a.m. for an on-the-spot preliminary investigation, engaging with stakeholders and gathering firsthand accounts.
In a statement, the Commissioner reiterated government’s commitment to maternal and child health, noting that Governor Eno had earlier declared a statewide fight against maternal mortality as a core priority of his administration. He highlighted recent investments in healthcare infrastructure, the recruitment of skilled personnel, and the strengthening of emergency response systems as proof of this resolve.
The government further assured the public of full transparency in the inquiry, stressing that any confirmed cases of negligence would attract appropriate sanctions under civil service and professional regulations.
“We appeal for calm and understanding from the public as the Government works diligently to uncover the facts and take decisive steps to further strengthen maternal and child health in Akwa Ibom State,” the statement read.
The tragic incident has sparked public concern, but authorities insist that the health and safety of mothers and children remain a top priority of the Eno-led administration.
