The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Rt. Hon. Nsikak Ekong, has expressed readiness to collaborate with the National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employees of Nigeria (NASWDEN), Akwa Ibom State chapter, in strengthening environmental sustainability efforts across the state.
The partnership move was formalized on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, during a meeting with members of the Association at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources.
Ekong, while assuring the Association of his full support, emphasized the need for NASWDEN to formally register with the state government, in addition to its existing recognition by the Federal Government. He noted that proper registration and membership profiling would provide structure, credibility, and accountability for the group.
“Profiling your members will help us know who is doing what, where they are located, and the specific services they render. That way, we can monitor activities, ensure compliance, and address misconduct when it arises,” the Commissioner explained.
Highlighting the economic potential of the sector, Ekong described scrap scavenging as a viable contributor to the state’s revenue base and a field that deserves adequate support from both government and private stakeholders.
He commended the Association’s leadership for taking the initiative to engage with the ministry, noting that such dialogue was critical in addressing their operational challenges and positioning the sector for growth.
Ekong further disclosed plans to convene another meeting with NASWDEN, this time involving relevant stakeholders, to chart a sustainable framework for maximum productivity.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Iquo Abia, Esq., appreciated the delegation for their visit and assured them of the ministry’s openness to collaboration.
Earlier, the State Chairman of NASWDEN, Mr. Etebong Odiong, thanked the Commissioner for granting audience to the association and pledged the group’s readiness to work hand-in-hand with the ministry for the overall benefit of the state.
The meeting was also attended by the Director of Pollution and Waste Management, Mrs. Maria Akpan, represented by Bella Emmanson.
