The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert, forecasting a two-day spell of heavy downpour across several states in Nigeria, with potential implications for flooding and disruptions in affected areas.
According to the advisory released on Monday, residents in Niger, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Kebbi States should prepare for intense rainfall activities expected to persist over the next 48 hours. The weather alert extends to Plateau, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Bauchi, and Zamfara States, where similar weather conditions are anticipated.
NiMet advised communities in low-lying and flood-prone areas to stay vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines, warning that the volume of rainfall may trigger flash floods and pose risks to transportation, agriculture, and infrastructure.
“The public is urged to take necessary precautions and avoid movement in flooded areas. Local authorities are also advised to activate their emergency response plans,” the agency stated.
This forecast comes amid a broader pattern of increased rainfall during the current wet season, as climate change continues to influence weather extremes across Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region.
NiMet reiterated its commitment to providing timely and accurate weather updates and called on the media, emergency services, and relevant government agencies to disseminate the alert and support public awareness efforts.
