Tragedy has struck the football world as Liverpool and Portugal forward, Diogo Jota, has been confirmed dead following a fatal car accident in Spain. He was 28.
The accident occurred on the A-52 motorway at kilometre 65, near the municipality of Palacios de Sanabria, in Zamora Province. Spanish sports outlet MARCA reported on Thursday that Jota died at the scene, along with his 26-year-old brother, Andre Jota, when their vehicle caught fire after the crash.
“Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota dies in a traffic accident in the province of Zamora,” the publication stated in its brief but shocking report this morning.
Jota, born in December 1996, began his Premier League journey with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017 following a successful loan spell. His brilliant form earned him a transfer to Liverpool in 2020, where he quickly became a key attacking asset for the Reds and contributed to their domestic and European campaigns.
Fans, teammates, and football communities around the world have begun pouring out tributes for the late star, remembering him not only for his skill and tenacity on the pitch but also for his humility and sportsmanship off it.
Liverpool FC and the Portuguese Football Federation are yet to issue official statements as the world mourns the untimely loss of one of its bright football talents.
