The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his historic emergence as Chairperson of the Council of the World Customs Organisation (WCO).
SWAN’s message of commendation was conveyed in a formal letter dated June 30, 2025, and signed by the association’s Secretary-General, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo. The association, under the leadership of Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, described Mr. Adeniyi’s election in Brussels as a monumental milestone that reflects his unwavering dedication, professionalism, and visionary leadership.
The WCO, a 73-year-old international body with 186 member countries, has never before had a Nigerian at its helm — a feat SWAN hailed as both historic and inspirational.
“This historic feat, which makes you the first Nigerian to lead the 73-year-old WCO, is a testament to your competence and integrity,” the letter read. “Your emergence underscores the confidence that nations across the world have in your ability to lead.”
SWAN praised the Customs CG for driving the rapid growth and global visibility of the Nigeria Customs Service since assuming office, noting that his impact has extended beyond trade facilitation into areas of national pride and public engagement.
Citing the successful hosting of the African Women’s Club Volleyball Championship by the NCS, SWAN lauded Mr. Adeniyi’s openness to leveraging sports as a tool for public unity and engagement. The tournament was widely acclaimed as one of the best-organised volleyball events on the continent.
“As Sports Journalists, we trust you will continue to blaze the trail in your professional practice as a pointer for greater achievements ahead,” the association stated.
SWAN further pledged its readiness to partner with the Customs boss in harnessing the power of sports to deepen public engagement and national cohesion.
“We assure you of our readiness to continuously work with you, even as you use Sports as a platform to connect with the larger Nigerian populace,” the letter added.
The association wished Mr. Adeniyi a successful and impactful tenure at the helm of the global customs body, expressing confidence that his leadership would continue to inspire excellence across sectors.
