Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that Rivers and Bayelsa States are likely to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the near future, signalling a potential political shift across the South-South geopolitical zone ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio made the statement on Saturday during a grand reception held in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, to officially welcome Governor Umo Eno into the APC following his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Senate President, addressing a gathering of party faithful, APC chieftains, and members of the Progressive Governors Forum, expressed confidence that the region was gradually aligning with the APC’s progressive vision.
“Governor Sheriff of Delta State, thank you for joining the progressive family and moving the South-South in a progressive direction,” Akpabio said. “Governor Umo Eno, after you, Rivers State will just tumble. After Rivers State, Bayelsa will join.”
He also commended the recent electoral victory in Edo State, noting, “We won election with Governor Otu in Edo State and we produced an amiable Monday Okpebholo. Congratulations once again for your victory.”
Governor Eno had earlier in April hinted at his disillusionment with the PDP, citing internal party crises as a key reason for his eventual defection. His official entry into the APC on June 6 marked a significant political development in Akwa Ibom State and across the region.
The high-profile event was attended by influential party stakeholders, further fuelling speculation that more defections may be imminent from the South-South stronghold of the opposition.
As the APC strengthens its foothold in the Niger Delta, all eyes are now on the political calculations shaping the countdown to the 2027 polls.
