There was tension at the gate of Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, on Tuesday as athletes representing Ogun State staged a protest over unpaid allowances.
The visibly aggrieved sportsmen and women, said to be participants in an ongoing competition, blocked the main exit gate of the university, thereby preventing buses and other vehicles from going in or out of the premises.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the athletes are demanding immediate payment of their allowances, which they claim have been delayed by state authorities. The protest has caused traffic gridlock in and around the university community.
Calls have been made for the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports to urgently intervene and address the situation to prevent further escalation.
