Legendary former Green Eagles captain, Chief Segun Odegbami (MON), has confirmed his attendance at the Governor Umo Eno Sports Award ceremony slated for Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Uyo.
Odegbami, fondly nicknamed “Mathematical” for his intelligent and dazzling style of play during his football career, gave the confirmation during a telephone conversation on Friday, December 12, 2025, with the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey.
The award ceremony, organized by the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Sports, is designed to honour and celebrate the state’s most outstanding athletes for the year 2025. It will also feature the presentation of prizes to winners of the 2025 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival and medalists from the National Youth Games.
A member of Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team, Odegbami is now the proprietor of the Segun Odegbami International College and Sports Academy. At the event, he will serve as a resource person, delivering a motivational lecture to young athletes titled “Sports and I.”
The ceremony is expected to attract top government functionaries, leading sports administrators, chairmen of sports associations, local government chairmen, sports supervisors, and some of Akwa Ibom State’s finest athletes.
The presence of the football icon is anticipated to further inspire young talents and underscore the state government’s commitment to sports development and youth empowerment.
