ABEOKUTA, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, has unveiled a comprehensive blueprint aimed at overhauling Nigerian sports administration and development. Speaking during a press briefing at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Dikko outlined a strategic vision anchored on performance, accountability, athlete welfare, private sector investment, and global alignment.
Performance Bonds to Ensure Accountability
Dikko proposed the introduction of performance bonds for presidents of sports federations, a move he says will promote competence and measurable results. The initiative is designed to weed out opportunists and empower capable leaders with genuine development plans for Nigerian sports.
Prioritizing Athlete Welfare
He affirmed that the NSC is prioritizing athlete welfare through initiatives such as business-class travel, quality accommodations, and direct financial support. Dedicated budget lines, he said, have been earmarked for preparations towards the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and other international events.
Driving Private Sector Investment
To ensure sustainability, Dikko emphasized the need to integrate private sector involvement into sports development. According to him, creating an enabling environment for businesses to invest will unlock new revenue streams and elevate sports as a viable economic sector.
Fostering National Unity and Global Talent Integration
Describing sports as a powerful tool for national cohesion, Dikko hinted at plans to include diaspora athletes in future National Sports Festivals. This move, he said, would promote talent development and reflect the global scope of Nigerian excellence.
Strengthening Media Engagement
Calling for stronger media participation, the NSC Chairman proposed the establishment of dedicated media centers to spotlight athlete achievements and foster public inspiration through storytelling and direct engagement with record-breaking performers.

Dikko concluded with a call for structured planning, benchmarking, and progress tracking. He stressed the need to align Nigeria’s sports development strategies with international standards to ensure long-term success and global competitiveness.
