Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Akwa Ibom-born football legend, Charles Bassey, MON, who passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2025, in Eket.
In a condolence message released by his Chief Press Secretary, Ekerete Udoh, Governor Eno described Bassey’s death as a monumental loss not only to Akwa Ibom State but also to the entire nation. He also extended heartfelt sympathies to the family of another football icon, Christian Chukwu, MFR—former Super Eagles coach and captain—who died the same day in Enugu.
Governor Eno paid glowing tribute to the contributions of both men to the growth and development of football in Nigeria, noting that their deaths on the same day have created a deep void in the country’s football community.
“Coach Bassey was phenomenal in handling top-tier clubs across the nation and played a pivotal role in talent discovery here in Akwa Ibom, especially through his coaching stints with Mobil Pegasus FC and later Akwa United FC,” the Governor said.
He further lamented that Bassey’s wealth of experience would have greatly benefited the state’s upcoming sports academy, which is currently under development.
“To Coach Bassey’s family, I urge you to take solace in the enduring legacy he leaves behind and the love you shared with him while he lived,” Eno added.
The Governor also extended his condolences to the family of Christian “Chairman” Chukwu, highlighting his leadership and contributions to Nigerian football both on the pitch and from the sidelines.
“Coach Chukwu brought pride and global recognition to our nation through his dedication and passion for the game,” the statement concluded.
