As part of efforts to enhance tourism in Akwa Ibom State, the government is set to commence hotel grading and training for tour and hospitality industry operators.
The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Anieti Udofia, disclosed this during his visit to the Hotels Management and Tourism Board (HTB) in Uyo, as part of his tour of parastatals under his supervision.
Dr. Udofia emphasized that the initiative aligns with international best practices in tourism development and will benefit visitors by providing clear classifications of hotels. This will guide tourists in selecting accommodations based on budget and service expectations. Additionally, the grading process will help determine the revenue potential of hospitality businesses in the state.
In a related development, the state government plans to train frontline hospitality workers, including airport front desk officers, taxi drivers, and other key transport service providers. The training aims to enhance their communication skills, etiquette, and customer service, ensuring a positive image for Akwa Ibom State.
Dr. Udofia underscored the importance of aligning the initiative with the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno, who, having a background in the hospitality industry, fully supports the move. He urged the HTB management to collaborate with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism for the successful execution of the plan.
Receiving the Commissioner and his team, the Director in charge of HTB, Sir Ekan Afangide, pledged full cooperation to actualize the government’s vision for tourism development.
The Commissioner was accompanied on the tour by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Grace Akpan, and other key officials, including the HSA and SSA to the Governor on Tourism, Mrs. Ime Udo and Mrs. Imaobong Zoe, respectively.
