The loss of a father leaves a void that words cannot fill, but in the case of Sir Almand Michael Mbong, fondly known as Topman, his legacy is one that will continue to shine brightly. His was a life marked by dedication, service, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to family, faith, and education. Though his physical presence may be gone, the indelible mark he left on
those who knew him will remain forever.
Born on April 30, 1948, into the noble family of Mayor Michael Akamo Mbong and Madam Veronica Esaha Nwah, Sir Almand embodied the meaning of his birth name, Odudu—which signifies power. From an early age, he exuded strength, resilience, and an insatiable thirst for knowledge.
His journey through life was defined by intellectual excellence and unwavering commitment to education. He began his academic pursuit at St. Francis Catholic School, Ikot Ataku, before proceeding to St. Columbanus Secondary School, Ikwen, where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1964. His love for learning saw him pursue further studies at the Qua Iboe Church Teacher’s Training College, Ndon Eyo, the College of Education, Uyo, and ultimately, the University of Calabar, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Education in 1995.
A devoted educator, mentor, and administrator, Sir Almand’s career spanned several institutions, where he played a pivotal role in shaping young minds. His unwavering commitment to academic excellence and discipline saw him serve in multiple schools across Akwa Ibom, leaving an indelible impact on generations of students. Even after his retirement from civil service in 2000, his passion for education led him to continue his service at SS Peter and Paul Comprehensive College, Ibeno, until his health declined.
Sir Almand was deeply rooted in his Catholic faith, serving in various capacities, including Parish Pastoral Council Chairman, Catechist, Finance Committee Chairman, and Chief Servant of the Catholic Evangelization Team. His commitment to the church was unwavering, and he was a proud Knight of St. John International (Esene Commandery), an order dedicated to faith, service, and charity.
He was also a man of order and discipline, serving as a member of the Men of Order and Discipline (MOD)—a security unit tasked with protecting the sanctity of the church. His faith was not just a belief but a way of life, guiding his every action and decision.
Topman was a teacher, a leader, and a role model whose presence commanded respect and admiration. He was known for his wisdom, charisma, and infectious enthusiasm for life. Whether in the classroom, the community, or among friends, he embodied integrity, discipline, and hard work. He was a mentor to many, a voice of reason, and a beacon of excellence.
His personal life was a reflection of his deep love and devotion. He shared a blissful union with his beloved wife, Rosemary (of blessed memory), and together, they built a strong and loving family. His legacy lives on in his four sons, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, all of whom carry forward the values he instilled in them.
On March 19, 2024, just days after bidding farewell to his beloved wife, Sir Almand Michael Mbong answered the eternal call. While his passing leaves a profound void, we do not mourn as those without hope. Instead, we celebrate a life well lived—a life of impact, love, and unshakable faith.
Topman may have departed, but his legacy endures. His wisdom continues to guide us, his love remains imprinted in our hearts, and his spirit lives on in the lives he touched.
