The Akwa Ibom State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has commenced the 2023/2024 Teachers’ Professional Development Training (TPD) to enhance teaching quality across the state.
The four-day event, organized in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), is currently taking place at Government Primary School, Obio Imo Street, Uyo.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Dr. Anietie Etuk, urged teachers to take the training seriously, emphasizing the importance of foundational education in shaping students into responsible citizens. He also lauded Governor Umo Eno and UBEC for consistently funding the state’s basic education programs.
However, Dr. Etuk expressed concern over the vandalism of educational facilities in public schools, urging communities to safeguard government investments in education.
Board Member for School Services, Sir John Udo, condemned the unprofessional conduct of some teachers, particularly those engaging in disputes in the presence of students, and called for higher standards of professionalism.
Permanent Secretary of SUBEB, Dr. (Mrs.) Roseline Mfon, commended Dr. Etuk’s leadership and the state government’s commitment to teachers’ welfare. Meanwhile, UBEC representative Mrs. Enomfon Usen encouraged participants to extend the knowledge gained to their peers to support the state’s educational agenda.
Director of Teachers’ Professional Development at SUBEB, Mrs. Blessing Ibiam, highlighted that the training is designed to equip teachers with essential skills for character building and academic excellence.
The training, which commenced on February 27, will conclude on March 3, 2025.
