The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, in its plenary session on Thursday, confirmed 27 nominees for Commissioner and Special Adviser positions, following their screening process.
The confirmation came after the House received a letter from Governor Umo Eno, requesting an assessment of their suitability for appointment into the State Executive Council, in accordance with Section 192 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The nominees, drawn from various local government areas, were subjected to scrutiny, with no adverse reports recorded against them.
Following a voice vote, Speaker Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong directed the Clerk, Mrs. Nsikak Orok, to formally communicate the resolution to Governor Umo Eno for the swearing-in of the confirmed appointees. The House also commended the governor for his selection of individuals with proven integrity and urged him to consider their expertise and experience when assigning portfolios.
In a separate development, the Assembly passed a Vote of Confidence in Governor Umo Eno’s leadership, reaffirming their support for his administration. Additionally, the House called for the institutionalization of the ongoing public service verification exercise to enhance transparency and reduce government expenditure.
Furthermore, the House mandated the Ministry of Agriculture and relevant agencies to prioritize the mass cultivation of inter-state dependent food products. This resolution, prompted by a motion sponsored by Hon. Prince Ukpong Akpabio (Essien Udim State Constituency), aims to curb capital flight and reduce the state’s heavy reliance on food imports, ensuring food security for residents.
The House adjourned its session and is set to reconvene on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
