Akwa Ibom Police Refutes Allegations of Illegal Detention of Minor

Uyo, February 8, 2025 — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has denied reports alleging the illegal detention of a 10-year-old boy, Bright Okon James, clarifying that the minor was taken into custody over accusations of defiling a three-year-old girl.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, stated that the case is under investigation, and medical evidence has confirmed the incident. According to the police, the suspect voluntarily confessed to the crime and will be arraigned in court on February 10, 2025.

The Command also refuted claims of any form of trial by ordeal, stressing that such practices are illegal under Nigerian law. “The Akwa Ibom State Police strongly condemns any form of extrajudicial actions,” the statement read.

Reaffirming the commitment of the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, to justice and due process, the Command urged the public to desist from spreading misinformation and allow legal proceedings to take their course.

The case continues to draw public attention as authorities proceed with legal action.
