UYO, Akwa United Football Club received a significant morale boost on Saturday as the Executive and members of the Ex-Ibom Stars and Akwa United Players Association paid a solidarity visit to the team’s training ground at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
Leading the delegation, the association’s President, Mr. Solomon Edem, emphasized that the visit aimed to encourage the team in its ongoing battle to escape relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Akwa United currently sits at the bottom of the league table with 20 points from 22 games.
“It is with deep concern that we decided to visit our team today to show support and solidarity following the difficulties our team is currently experiencing this season,” Mr. Edem said. “We have been watching the games, and we believe the team’s position on the table does not truly reflect the efforts of the management and players. We want to assure you that we are solidly behind this team.”
Expressing hope for a turnaround, Mr. Edem added, “With 16 matches remaining, we believe Akwa United can fight its way out of the relegation zone and finish in a more comfortable position.”
Other members of the delegation included Coach Itoro Akpan, Mr. Obot Udoka, Mr. Nsini Patrick, Coach John Emah, and Mr. Mfon Udoh.
Responding to the gesture, Akwa United Chairman Elder Paul Bassey expressed gratitude to the former players for their support, acknowledging their understanding of the challenges facing the club.
“This is the kind of encouragement we need at a time like this,” Elder Bassey stated. “Since we took over, we have elevated this club to winning the FA Cup and the league title. We are confident that, just as we have done in the past, we will navigate our way out of this difficult situation.”
Akwa United will face Enyimba FC on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in a crucial encounter as they continue their fight to remain in the NPFL. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
