Akwa United head coach, Kennedy Boboye, has issued a heartfelt apology to fans following the team’s poor run in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). The Promise Keepers have struggled in the new year, managing just one point from two home matches—a situation Boboye describes as “unfortunate.”
Speaking after their recent underwhelming performances, Boboye took full responsibility for the team’s struggles and assured supporters that the squad is working hard to turn things around. He acknowledged the growing concerns among fans but urged them to keep faith in the team as they continue to push for better results.
“It’s disappointing that we couldn’t start the year as we had hoped. Our target was to secure six points from our home games and climb out of the red zone, but we only managed one,” Boboye admitted. “That is not good enough, and I have told my players to step up and justify the massive support they receive.”
Despite their current struggles, Boboye remains optimistic about Akwa United’s chances of resurgence, especially with the league becoming increasingly competitive. He believes his team has what it takes to regain their status and is determined to steer them back to winning ways.
“Our next match is against Abia Warriors, and we are going to Umuahia with the mindset of getting all three points,” he declared. “The players we have selected for this game are ready to give their all and ensure we return to winning ways as quickly as possible.”
Boboye also expressed gratitude to the club’s management, led by Elder Paul Bassey, whom he described as a “true and tested football person.” He credited Bassey for his role in Akwa United’s league triumph in 2021 and remains confident in his leadership.
