UYO: In a bold stride toward economic revitalization and tourism development, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State is spearheading a comprehensive road infrastructure campaign aimed at enhancing connectivity and opening up access to the state’s rich cultural and natural attractions.
Understanding that a well-connected road network is fundamental to tourism and rural development, the administration has rolled out several strategic road projects across the state. These include major arterial roads and rural linkages designed to boost mobility, reduce travel time, and stimulate local economies.
Among the signature projects are the 10.9-kilometre Use-Ikot Amama Road with two bridges, and the expansive 21.5-kilometre Ikot Anyan Ediene–Ikot Ntia–Urua Naira–Ikot Nseyen–Nkwot–Nung Ukim Road. Other notable projects include the 11.6-kilometre Ikot Imo–Ikot Ekpene Udo–Okon Eket Road, the 23.25-kilometre Ikot Ekaide–Ikot Okoro–Ikot Ibritam Road, and the newly commissioned 15.8-kilometre Ikot Esu–Otomo–Azumini Road. Additionally, 1.53 kilometres of internal roads in Ikot Udom, Ika Local Government Area, were unveiled recently by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON.
These projects are not just infrastructural milestones, they form the backbone of the state’s tourism strategy. With improved access to key heritage and natural sites, Akwa Ibom is steadily positioning itself as a preferred destination for local and international tourists.
Sites such as the Mary Slessor Cairn in Ibiono Ibom, the mystical Blue River in Ukanafun, the revered Obio Ubium shrine in Nsit Ubium, and the stunning waterfalls of Ikono and Ini LGAs are now more accessible than ever, thanks to the improved road network.
Governor Eno’s infrastructure-driven vision reflects a larger goal: transforming Akwa Ibom into a thriving economic hub and a beacon of sustainable tourism in Nigeria.
With roads paving the way, the future of tourism in Akwa Ibom is not just promising it’s already unfolding.
