In a landmark gesture symbolising progress and commitment to youth development, the Executive Chairman of Eket Local Government Area, Mr. Akaniyene Tommey, has officially handed over a parcel of land to the Akwa Ibom State Government for the design and construction of the ARISE Sports Academy.
Addressing dignitaries, community stakeholders, and government representatives at the ceremony, Mr. Tommey described the event as a “historic milestone” in the journey toward youth empowerment, talent discovery, and sustainable development. He praised the state government’s foresight in choosing Eket as the site for this transformative sports initiative.
“The decision to situate this Sports Academy in Eket is both timely and visionary. It speaks volumes about the state government’s commitment to building a future where the energies and talents of our young people are channelled productively, not just for recreation, but for national and international impact,” the Chairman declared.
He noted that Eket, home to many gifted athletes in football, basketball, and other sports, has long needed a facility of this calibre to harness and nurture talent. The ARISE Sports Academy, he said, will provide the necessary infrastructure, training, and exposure to elevate local athletes to global platforms.
In an emotional tribute to the legacy of past leaders, Mr. Tommey acknowledged the foundational role played by former Eket Council Chairman, Chief Samuel Atang, who spearheaded the construction of the iconic Eket Sports Stadium. He also lauded former Governor Udom Emmanuel for upgrading the facility to international standards.
The Chairman reserved special commendation for the current governor, His Excellency Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, under whose administration the ARISE Agenda is gaining traction. He expressed gratitude for the appointment of an illustrious son of Eket, Mr. Paul Bassey, as Commissioner for Sports Development—an act he described as “a source of pride and strategic positioning for Eket in state-level sports development.”
Mr. Tommey seized the opportunity to appeal to the Governor for two urgent interventions at the Eket Sports Stadium: the construction of a perimeter fence and the installation of an electricity transformer, both crucial for facility security and expanded usability.
He also acknowledged the cooperation of the host community, describing their support as vital to the project’s success. “In handing over this land today, we are handing over hope. Hope to the young boy who dreams of becoming the next Victor Osimhen and to the young girl with the fire of Tobi Amusan,” he said passionately.
Concluding his speech, the Chairman reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to supporting the state and its implementing partners, pledging a conducive environment for the success of the ARISE Sports Academy.
“This is the beginning of something great,” Mr. Tommey declared. “A dream planted in Eket is ready to bear fruit for Akwa Ibom, for Nigeria, and for the world.”.
