Abuja, In a strategic move to deepen international collaboration and enhance access to global information resources, the National Library of Nigeria (NLN) has signed a Letter of Intent to Cooperate on American Spaces Programming with the United States Embassy.
The brief but symbolic ceremony took place at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and was attended by key officials, including the Director of Public Services Department, Mr. Kehinde Ojo, and the Special Assistant on Professional Matters, Mr. Mohammed Nma Baba. They accompanied the National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Chinwe Anunobi, who signed the agreement on behalf of the NLN. Signing for the U.S. Embassy was Ms. Victoria Cook, Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer.
In her remarks, Ms. Cook highlighted the fruitful relationship between the Embassy and the NLN, expressing optimism that the “Windows on America” program would be well utilized. She emphasized its potential to offer educational and cultural enrichment to Nigerian communities.
Dr. Anunobi, in response, reaffirmed the NLN’s commitment to fully leveraging the initiative for the benefit of library users and the wider public. She also expressed readiness to explore further collaborative opportunities with the U.S. Embassy.
This partnership comes on the heels of successful advocacy by the NLN, resulting in the upcoming establishment of a “Windows on America” center at the NLN branch in Katsina State. The formal launch is scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, 2025.
“Windows on America” centers, created by the U.S. Department of State in collaboration with local institutions, serve as vibrant information and cultural exchange hubs. They provide access to U.S.-related resources, host workshops, lectures, film screenings, and promote youth engagement.
This development aligns with the National Library of Nigeria’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, particularly Objective 3 (Goals 1–3) and Objective 4 (Goal 2), which emphasize lifelong learning, international collaboration, and community outreach.
The American Space initiative in Katsina is expected to significantly benefit the youth and foster a deeper understanding between Nigeria and the United States through shared educational and cultural experiences.
