Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen delivered a crucial goal to secure a 1-1 draw for Galatasaray against Hatayspor in a tense Turkish Super Lig encounter at the Mersin Stadyumu on Friday night.
Osimhen, who has been in stellar form for The Lions, showcased his class once again by converting a penalty in the 56th minute, rescuing his side from what could have been a shocking defeat. The result leaves Galatasaray reflecting on missed opportunities despite their dominance in the match.
Coming off a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir, where Osimhen played a pivotal role with an assist, Galatasaray entered the game brimming with confidence. Facing a Hatayspor side with the league’s most porous defense, having conceded 31 goals in 18 matches, The Lions were expected to secure a comfortable win.
However, the evening didn’t go as planned. In the 28th minute, Hatayspor’s Cemail Sertel capitalized on a rare defensive lapse to give the hosts an unexpected lead. Earlier, Osimhen thought he had opened the scoring for Galatasaray, but his goal was ruled out for offside.
Galatasaray responded with urgency in the second half. Just eight minutes in, a clever play by Dries Mertens earned a penalty, and Osimhen stepped up with composure, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to level the score.
The Nigerian international nearly turned the game around moments later, coming agonizingly close to doubling his tally. In the 68th minute, he had the ball in the net again, but for the second time that evening, the goal was disallowed for offside.
Despite Galatasaray’s dominance, with Osimhen leading the charge and registering six shots on target, they couldn’t find a winner. The Lions were forced to settle for a point, leaving them with mixed emotions as they continue their push in the league.
Osimhen’s performance, however, stood out, with his tireless effort and clinical finishing reaffirming his status as one of the league’s most influential players.
