The Executive Chairman of Eket Local Government, Mkpisong Hon. Akaniyene Tommey, has called on citizens to remain steadfast in promoting peace and unity, describing security as a vital enabler for socioeconomic development.
The chairman made this appeal during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) celebration and wreath-laying ceremony held at the Eket Cenotaph, located behind Eket Sports Stadium. The event was organized to honor Nigeria’s fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives in defense of the nation.
In his address, Hon. Tommey stressed the connection between security and development, stating, “It is pertinent to mention that development cannot thrive where there is no peace and security. To foster socioeconomic development in Eket, we need a peaceful and conducive environment where infrastructure and human capital development, as envisioned by the Akan Tommey administration, can be accomplished.”
The chairman highlighted the 2025 budget, tagged “Budget of Rejuvenation,” as a roadmap for growth. He explained that the budget prioritizes people-centric and socially inclusive policies aimed at achieving macroeconomic stability, increasing revenue and employment opportunities, fostering agricultural innovation, advancing rural development, improving infrastructure, enhancing security, and boosting education. These efforts align with the broader ARISE Agenda championed by Governor Pastor Umo Eno, PhD.
In a display of commitment to the welfare of those who serve, Hon. Tommey pledged continued support for the families and widows of fallen heroes. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices of servicemen and women who defend the nation’s territorial integrity.
Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian Legion, Eket Chapter, Eld. (Major) Assam Jim called for peace among dissident groups and urged the Federal Government to allocate increased resources for national defense.
The ceremony featured several activities, including wreath-laying, an inspection of guards, a parade by the Nigerian Legion, a moment of silence, gun salutes, and the decoration of emblems.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the military and underscores the need for peace and security as the foundation for progress in Eket and beyond.
