Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Efforts to establish the Akwa Ibom Energy and Mineral Resources Commission have gained momentum following a courtesy visit by members of the Ibom Community Development Stakeholders Forum (IBCODEF) to the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Eld.) Udeme Otong, in Uyo.
During the visit, IBCODEF, led by its International President, Prince John Etim, presented a draft bill proposing the establishment of the commission. The bill, sponsored by IBCODEF, seeks to address the historical neglect of oil and gas-producing communities in Akwa Ibom by ensuring the equitable distribution of benefits, enhanced living standards, and environmental protection.
Prince Etim highlighted the need for a commission to oversee the exploration, extraction, transportation, and management of Akwa Ibom’s energy and mineral resources, ensuring sustainable practices and compliance with statutory provisions.
The Paramount Ruler of Itu, HRM Edidem Dr. Edet Akpan Inyang, who also serves as Chairman of IBCODEF’s Traditional Rulers Joint Committee, commended the group’s vision and appealed to the Speaker to collaborate with IBCODEF for the realization of this goal.
Prof. Evans Udofia, IBCODEF’s Director of Environmental Affairs, emphasized the urgency of the bill, noting that environmental issues, such as gas flaring in Ikot Abasi, affect communities far beyond the immediate areas. He assured the Speaker of IBCODEF’s readiness to provide the necessary data and support to actualize the commission.
Rt. Hon. (Eld.) Udeme Otong expressed appreciation for IBCODEF’s proactive efforts, acknowledging the need for Akwa Ibom to catch up with other oil-producing states in resource management. He pledged to engage the state government to consider the bill as an executive proposal to fast-track its passage.
“Akwa Ibom is one of the highest oil-producing states in the country, yet we lack a structured commission to oversee the management of our resources,” Hon. Otong stated. “This initiative is long overdue, and I commend IBCODEF for their foresight and dedication.”
Other notable members of IBCODEF present included Amb. Victor Thomas (Vice President), Bishop Joseph Ekwere (Director of Projects), Hon. Joshua Asuquo (Director of Admin. and Strategy), and Engr. Victor Udom (Assistant Secretary).
The proposed commission aims to foster statewide community participation, equitable resource distribution, and the protection of Akwa Ibom’s environment, paving the way for sustainable development and economic growth.
