The Federal Government has approved the comprehensive modernisation and upgrade of the Onne, Rivers, Delta and Calabar ports as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and boost economic activities.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Bolaji Akinola, the latest approval is in addition to the earlier approval for the modernisation and upgrade of the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports in Lagos.

The Federal Government said the development underscores its determination to build a balanced, efficient and competitive national port system capable of supporting increased trade, investment and economic growth.

The statement explained that the approval forms part of the administration’s broader strategy to reposition Nigeria’s maritime sector as a major driver of economic growth, trade, investment and employment under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

It added that the improved infrastructure and operational efficiency at the Onne, Rivers, Delta and Calabar ports would enhance cargo handling, reduce vessel turnaround times, strengthen regional connectivity and make the movement of goods more predictable and cost-effective.

The Federal Government also reiterated its approval for the development of new deep seaports across the country, including the Ibom Deep Seaport in Akwa Ibom, Bakassi Deep Seaport in Cross River, Agge Deep Seaport in Bayelsa, Gateway Deep Seaport in Ogun, Ondo Deep Seaport in Ondo and Bonny Deep Seaport in Rivers State.

The developments, according to the statement, are expected to expand Nigeria’s maritime capacity and create a more interconnected port network to support commerce and industrial development across the country.
