Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has unveiled a digital registration initiative for commercial tricycle (Keke) operators as part of the state government’s drive to strengthen public safety and enhance security through technology.
Governor Eno, while commending the Ministry of Science and Digital Economy for advancing the state’s digital transformation agenda, said the new system would enable commuters to verify the identity of registered tricycle operators by scanning a QR code with their mobile phones. He disclosed that the initiative would become operational in August.
According to the Governor, a successful QR code scan will display the registered operator’s name and photograph, allowing passengers to confirm that the individual driving the tricycle matches the official registration details. He added that commuters would also be able to share the information with family members or trusted contacts before commencing their journey, thereby improving personal safety and accountability.
Governor Eno explained that the digital registration exercise is being implemented through a collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Science and Digital Economy as part of the administration’s broader strategy to leverage technology in tackling security challenges and improving public transportation.
The Governor issued a stern warning to operators, stating that once full enforcement begins, any commercial tricycle operating without digital registration will be impounded, while the operator will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He stressed that unregistered operators would be regarded as operating outside the state’s security network, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through innovative digital solutions.
The initiative is expected to improve passenger confidence, enhance the traceability of commercial tricycle operators, and strengthen security across Akwa Ibom State by ensuring that only properly identified and registered operators are allowed to provide commercial transport services.
