Theme: Living in Love and Unity
Text: Psalm 133:1-3; John 13:34-35; Ephesians 4:1-6
Introduction
Love and unity are the foundation of the Christian faith. God did not create His people to live in hatred, division, envy, or bitterness.
Rather, He calls us to live as one family, united in Christ and bound together by genuine love. A church filled with love and unity becomes a place where God dwells, prayers are answered, lives are transformed, and His blessings flow abundantly.
Today, our world is filled with conflict, broken relationships, tribalism, prejudice, and selfish ambition. As followers of Christ, we are called to be different by demonstrating the love of God in our words, actions, and relationships.
1. Love Is the Greatest Commandment
Jesus gave His disciples a new commandment:
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you…” (John 13:34-35).
Christ did not merely tell us to love; He demonstrated perfect love by sacrificing His life on the cross. Genuine Christian love is patient, kind, forgiving, humble, and selfless. It does not seek revenge or rejoice in another person’s downfall.
The world recognizes true disciples of Christ not by the size of their churches or their material possessions, but by the love they show to one another.
2. Unity Attracts God’s Blessings
Psalm 133:1 declares:
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”.
The Psalm goes on to compare unity to precious oil flowing from Aaron’s head and to the refreshing dew of Hermon. It concludes by saying that it is there, the place of unity, that God commands His blessing.
Where there is unity:
God releases His favour.
Families become stronger.
Churches grow spiritually.
Communities experience peace.
The Gospel spreads more effectively.
The division, however, weakens God’s people and gives room for the enemy to operate.
3. Humility Preserves Unity
Ephesians 4:2-3 teaches us to live:
“With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
Unity requires humility. Pride destroys relationships, while humility restores them. We must learn to forgive quickly, speak gently, avoid gossip, and settle disagreements peacefully.
No family, church, or organization can remain united without humility and mutual respect.
4. Love Must Be Practical
The love God expects is not merely spoken with words but demonstrated through actions.
We should:
Help those in need.
Encourage the discouraged.
Forgive those who offend us.
Pray for one another.
Celebrate the success of others instead of becoming jealous.
Live honestly and peacefully with everyone.
As James reminds us, faith without works is dead. Likewise, love without action is incomplete.
5. Christ Is Our Perfect Example
Jesus welcomed the rejected, forgave His enemies, healed the sick, fed the hungry, and prayed even for those who crucified Him.
If we desire to be like Christ, we must imitate His love.
As Paul writes in Ephesians 5:2:
“Walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us…”
Our love should extend beyond our friends to include our neighbours, strangers, and even those who oppose us.
Conclusion:
God is calling every believer today to become an ambassador of love and unity. Let us put away hatred, envy, bitterness, unforgiveness, and selfishness. Instead, let us embrace compassion, forgiveness, humility, patience, and peace.
When love reigns, unity flourishes. When unity flourishes, God’s blessings follow. Let us therefore commit ourselves to living as one body in Christ, loving one another sincerely, and working together for the advancement of God’s Kingdom.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing love toward us.
Fill our hearts with genuine love for one another. Remove every spirit of hatred, division, pride, jealousy, and forgiveness from our lives.
Help us to walk in humility, peace, and unity as true followers of Christ.
Make our families, churches, and communities places where Your love is evident and Your blessings abound. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
May this message inspire your congregation to become instruments of God’s love, peace, and unity in their homes, workplaces, churches, and communities.
