The Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health has commenced a comprehensive verification exercise for nurses and midwives practicing across the state, in compliance with a directive issued by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
The exercise, which covers both public and private healthcare institutions, is being conducted across the three senatorial districts of the state and is aimed at ensuring that all nursing and midwifery practitioners possess valid professional credentials and are duly registered with the regulatory body.
Health officials explained that the verification exercise is part of ongoing efforts by the NMCN to strengthen professional standards, enhance accountability, and safeguard the quality of healthcare services delivered to the public. The exercise is also expected to help identify unlicensed practitioners and ensure that only qualified personnel are allowed to provide nursing and midwifery services.
According to the Ministry of Health, all affected practitioners are expected to participate in the exercise and present relevant documents for authentication.
The ministry stressed that the verification process is not intended as a punitive measure but rather as a regulatory requirement designed to uphold professionalism and improve healthcare delivery across the state.
Stakeholders in the health sector have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward maintaining the integrity of the nursing profession and strengthening public confidence in healthcare services.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to ensure strict adherence to professional standards while promoting excellence in healthcare delivery throughout Akwa Ibom State.
