The Workers’ Day celebration in Akwa Ibom State on Friday witnessed a colourful and historic outing as the National Union of Dispatch Riders and Mail Operators of Nigeria (NUDRMON), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, marked its maiden participation in the annual event with pomp and pageantry.

The celebration, held at the Uyo Township Stadium on May 1, 2026, drew a massive turnout of workers across the state, including civil servants, parastatal staff, and members of various labour unions under the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).

NUDRMON, described as one of the emerging unions under the NLC structure in the state, made a bold impression as its members turned out in large numbers, adorned in distinctive white and green branded T-shirts. The dispatch riders, led by their State Chairman, Comrade Solomon Tom, added vibrancy to the event with a spirited march past and coordinated displays.

The ceremony was attended by Governor Umo Eno, who was represented by his Deputy, Akon Eyakenyi. The state government reiterated its commitment to workers’ welfare, describing labour as a critical partner in governance and development.

In separate remarks, the Commissioner for Labour and Manpower, Hon. Ikoedem Ekong, alongside the Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, Rt. Hon. Udo Kieran Akpan, commended workers for their resilience and contributions to the state’s growth. Labour leaders, including NLC Chairman, Comrade Sunny James, and TUC Chairman, Comrade Kingsley Akpan, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing unity and sustained advocacy for improved working conditions.

The event featured rich cultural performances, a ceremonial presentation of vehicles to newly elected labour leaders by the state government, and a colourful march past by participating unions and associations.

For NUDRMON, the outing marked a significant milestone, signaling its growing relevance and integration into the organised labour movement in Akwa Ibom State.
