Uyo, Spectators and fans at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium have expressed frustration over the poor sound quality during recent events, describing the experience as disappointing and unbefitting of a world-class facility.
Complaints resurfaced over the weekend after reports emerged that the sound system failed to deliver clear audio during preparations for a major performance by popular artist Davido. Eyewitnesses said members of Davido’s team struggled to connect their equipment to the stadium’s built-in speakers, which appeared to be non-functional.
Despite the stadium being originally fitted with modern public address and sound systems, attendees noted that organizers often resort to using a pair of outdated portable speakers for announcements, an arrangement many described as “embarrassing” for a venue of such standard.
“I have been complaining that someone is benefiting from the sound maintenance contract. The stadium was built with quality speakers, but on match days, they use old school speakers that can’t even cover the stands,” lamented one concerned observer.
The same source also pointed out the deteriorating state of the stadium’s display screens, urging the Akwa Ibom State Government, the Ministry of Sports, and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to take immediate action.
“This mediocrity cannot continue. We cannot keep tolerating substandard performance at the expense of quality and reputation,” the source added.
Built to host international sporting and entertainment events, the Godswill Akpabio Stadium was once celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most modern sports arenas. However, recent complaints suggest that poor maintenance and neglect may be undermining its status.
As of press time, neither the stadium management nor the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Sports had issued an official response to the allegations.
