The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has formally handed over the site of the proposed 3-kilometre Ikot Unya–Ikot Umiang Junction Road in Ikpa Ikono Clan, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, to the contractor for immediate commencement of work.
The project, facilitated by the Senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, Senator Ekong Sampson, is part of ongoing efforts to address critical infrastructure needs and open up rural communities within the area.
The handover ceremony was conducted by the Zonal Director of FERMA, Engineer Celestine Udemba, alongside a team of engineers, who formally handed over the project site to Marcel Engineering Services Limited, the contractor handling the construction.
Residents and indigenes of Ikot Unya and Ikot Umiang who witnessed the ceremony expressed excitement over the development, describing the project as a major intervention that would bring relief to communities that have endured years of difficult road conditions.
They said the completion of the road would improve movement of people and farm produce, enhance connectivity and stimulate economic activities across the benefiting communities.
Representing Senator Sampson at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mkpat Enin Chapter, Hon. (Comr.) Isaiah Lawrence, was accompanied by other prominent indigenes and stakeholders from the community.
The Ikot Unya–Ikot Umiang Junction Road is one of several infrastructure projects facilitated by Senator Sampson for communities within Mkpat Enin and the wider Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District.
Meanwhile, plans are also underway for the reactivation of electricity supply in Ikpa Ikono and other parts of Mkpat Enin, another intervention being facilitated by the senator.
