The Nigerian Senate has taken steps to review its security oversight structure amid growing concerns over the worsening security situation across the country.
Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, had served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence since the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly.
The development followed the Senate’s dissolution of the National Security and Intelligence Committee in November 2025, alongside the Committee on Air Force, with the chamber indicating that the committees would subsequently be reconstituted. At the time, Senator Buba said the dissolution was part of the Senate’s normal legislative processes and should not be interpreted as a judgment on his performance.
Buba’s leadership had, however, come under public scrutiny following a petition by the Northern Youth for Peace and Progress (NYPP), which called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to review his continued leadership of the sensitive security committee.
The group’s coordinator, Comrade Hassan Sadau, said the petition was motivated by concerns over insecurity in parts of Northern Nigeria and the need for stronger legislative oversight, transparency and public confidence in the handling of national security matters.
Earlier reports also quoted the group as raising allegations concerning a purported leaked video which it claimed could link the senator to activities benefiting bandit groups. However, the authenticity and implications of the material have not been independently established, and the allegations should therefore not be treated as proven facts.
There have also been online reports alleging that United States intelligence agencies were monitoring Senator Buba over alleged links to terrorist groups and claims that he sponsored individuals involved in criminal activities to undertake pilgrimages to Mecca. No credible independent evidence or official U.S. government confirmation supporting those claims has been established in the reports reviewed.
The controversy has consequently intensified calls for transparent investigation rather than reliance on unverified allegations.
The Senate’s handling of the security committee is particularly significant given the continuing challenges posed by terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.
With national security remaining one of the most sensitive areas of legislative oversight, observers say the Senate must ensure that its committee leadership commands public confidence, maintains institutional credibility and is capable of providing effective oversight of Nigeria’s security agencies.
The development also places renewed attention on the role of the Senate leadership, headed by Senator Godswill Akpabio, in ensuring that national security oversight remains effective, transparent and responsive to the country’s rapidly changing security challenges.
