Uyo, The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, has reaffirmed the commitment of the police to fostering peaceful coexistence between farmers and cattle dealers in the state. This assurance came during a crucial meeting held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, with representatives of the Farmers Association and the Cattle Dealers Association.
The meeting, convened in response to escalating tensions between the two groups, sought to address issues of conflict and chart a path toward mutual understanding. CP Azare highlighted the importance of harmony for the overall well-being of the state, cautioning against any form of violence or destruction of property.
“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command will take decisive action against anyone involved in fomenting trouble,” he warned. “We cannot allow the safety of our communities to be jeopardized by violence or lawlessness.”
The Commissioner expressed concerns over incidents where criminals have attacked cattle or stolen livestock, while also addressing the destruction of farmlands caused by grazing animals. He urged farmers to report such incidents to the police promptly rather than taking matters into their own hands.
CP Azare praised the contributions of the Fulani community in assisting the anti-grazing committee with tracking suspects and emphasized the police’s readiness to mediate disputes while maintaining law and order.
Alhaji Mohammed Mijinyawa, Chairman of the Cattle Dealers Association, commended the police for their proactive approach and pledged the association’s commitment to peaceful coexistence. He assured the farmers of the association’s willingness to cooperate with the police and promised to caution its members against any actions that might escalate tensions.
Speaking on behalf of the farmers, Mrs. Rosemary A. Ubia, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, thanked the Commissioner for his leadership and pledged the farmers’ commitment to resolving disputes lawfully. She also expressed optimism about sustained harmony, citing the understanding displayed during the dialogue.
The meeting concluded with a unanimous agreement from both farmers and cattle dealers to prioritize peace and cooperation. CP Azare reminded all stakeholders of their critical roles in society and stressed the importance of addressing grievances through lawful means, assuring continued police support to maintain peace.
The Akwa Ibom Police Command reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for violence and urged all parties to uphold the peace for the collective progress of the state.
