Member representing Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr. Alex Egbona, has expressed profound shock over the death of veteran journalist and Publisher of the Calabar-based The Pillar Today Newspaper, Mr. Anietie Ben Akpan, describing his passing as a painful loss to the journalism profession, the Niger Delta region, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
In a condolence message issued on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Dr. Egbona said he found it difficult to come to terms with the news of Akpan’s demise, noting that the late media practitioner still had invaluable contributions to make to journalism and society.
He said the deceased’s commitment to truth, professionalism, and public service had earned him respect across the media landscape.
The federal lawmaker recalled his long-standing relationship with the late publisher, dating back to the period when Akpan worked as a reporter with The Guardian in Calabar.
He noted that upon learning of Akpan’s deteriorating health a few weeks earlier, he promptly provided financial assistance to support urgent medical treatment and also contacted the journalist’s representative in the National Assembly in a bid to secure additional help.
“I did not only assist; I was in a hurry to send the financial assistance. I also reached out to his representative in the National Assembly, who is a close friend.
I wanted Anietie to live and continue doing his good works for humanity,” Egbona said. He added that receiving the news of Akpan’s death left him deeply saddened, describing the late publisher as a dedicated journalist who had paid his dues and served the profession with distinction.
Dr. Egbona further stated that both the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Association of Niger Delta Online Publishers (ANDOP), of which the late Akpan was a member, would greatly miss his wealth of experience and contributions.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, praying for God’s comfort and strength to sustain them through the difficult period, while assuring them that they would not face their grief alone.
