ENO INAUGURATES POWER COMMISSION —Sets 18-Month Target for Improved Electricity Supply

Governor Umo Eno has taken a major step toward addressing electricity challenges in Akwa Ibom State with the inauguration of the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission, a newly established body tasked with regulating the state’s electricity market and driving improved power supply.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held on Thursday at the Government House Banquet Hall, Uyo, Governor Eno said the establishment of the commission underscores his administration’s commitment to providing stable and reliable electricity to residents. He acknowledged the hardship being experienced by citizens due to inadequate power supply and expressed confidence that substantial improvements would be achieved within the next 18 months.

The Governor noted that the commission’s inauguration represents a significant milestone in the state’s power sector reforms, adding that the body is expected to create an enabling regulatory environment, attract private sector investment, and ensure efficient electricity service delivery across the state. He directed the commissioners to submit the commission’s budget within two weeks to enable the immediate commencement of operations.

Governor Eno also urged residents to support ongoing efforts by paying their electricity bills promptly, stressing that sustainability of the sector depends on responsible consumer participation. He commended the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly for enacting the Electricity Law, describing it as a critical foundation for the state’s energy transformation agenda. He added that the appointments reflected his administration’s commitment to competence, excellence, and economic development.

Responding on behalf of the commission, the Chairman, Mrs. Arit Uya, expressed appreciation to the Governor for the confidence reposed in the team and pledged that members would discharge their responsibilities diligently in line with their mandate.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the signing of the Code of Conduct and Ethics by the commissioners, followed by the presentation of their letters of appointment.
