UYO, A new chapter in Akwa Ibom State’s aviation history unfolded as the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo received its maiden international flight from Accra, Ghana, marking a significant step in the state’s push for global connectivity.
Speaking at the airport during the historic landing, Distinguished Senator Ekong Sampson lauded the state government for its sustained commitment to infrastructure development and continuity in governance.
“On behalf of my colleagues in the Senate and the House of Representatives, I congratulate the Governor, a great visionary who believes in sustaining the momentum of development and ensuring that projects are completed and sustained,” Sampson said.
The senator described the successful operation of the Uyo–Accra route as a bold stride toward positioning Akwa Ibom as a gateway for international travel and commerce, adding that the development would boost economic opportunities, tourism, and investment inflow into the state.
In a symbolic remark capturing the significance of the moment, Sampson noted that the journey from Uyo to Ghana signified more than a routine flight. “We left Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo to Ghana, abroad, I mean Uyo abroad,” he said, underscoring the airport’s new international status.
The arrival of the flight is widely seen as a testament to the state’s aviation ambitions and a validation of ongoing efforts to transform the airport into a regional hub. Stakeholders believe the milestone will further strengthen Akwa Ibom’s profile on the global stage while enhancing connectivity between Nigeria and other West African countries.
The maiden flight ceremony drew government officials, aviation stakeholders, and residents, all celebrating what many described as a long-awaited breakthrough for the state’s transport sector.
