Akwa Ibom State recorded a significant breakthrough on Thursday, November 27, 2025, as the Federal Government approved full international operational status for the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo. The milestone was secured during a strategic meeting in Abuja between Governor Umo Eno and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
With this approval, the airport joins the select group of Nigerian airports authorised to handle international traffic, a move expected to enhance global connectivity and position Akwa Ibom as a rising aviation hub in the region. The new status permits the airport to receive international airlines, facilitate cross-border flights, and serve as a direct gateway linking the state to key destinations across Africa and beyond.
According to government sources, international flight operations at the airport are scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2026.
Governor Umo Eno’s continued engagement with federal authorities and his strategic push for aviation development were central to securing the approval. The development is widely seen as a major win for the state, with prospects for expanded tourism, increased foreign investment, and greater economic activity.
It also reinforces the administration’s commitment to creating new opportunities for citizens, investors, and visitors.
