All fourteen passengers abducted by sea pirates along the Calabar–Oron waterways have been safely rescued in a joint security operation involving the Akwa Ibom State Police Command and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The successful rescue followed heightened advocacy by Senator Ekong Sampson on the floor of the Senate, where he called for urgent action to secure the victims’ release.
According to a press statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the operation was driven by credible intelligence, sustained surveillance, and coordinated inter-agency collaboration aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating within the maritime corridor.
Police authorities disclosed that operatives intensified targeted operations across identified flashpoints, leading to the safe recovery of all victims without any casualties.
“The rescued victims are currently undergoing medical evaluation and necessary debriefing before being reunited with their families,” the statement noted.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the professionalism and synergy between the police and EFCC operatives, describing the outcome as a clear demonstration of the effectiveness of collaborative security efforts in tackling complex crimes.
He assured that security agencies have stepped up efforts to track down and apprehend those responsible for the abduction, stressing that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
The Command further reassured residents, maritime operators, and the general public of strengthened security presence along the waterways, urging citizens to support ongoing efforts by providing timely and credible information.
Police also issued a stern warning to criminal elements to desist from illegal activities or face decisive action.
