The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed growing concern over the credibility and neutrality of Nigeria’s electoral process, amid mounting criticism surrounding the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a strongly worded position, the party noted that recent developments have intensified public scrutiny of the electoral umpire, particularly in the face of calls for the resignation of the INEC Chairman.
Critics, the ADC observed, have alleged partisan affiliations, claiming the embattled chairman is aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and a supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The ADC cautioned that any action perceived as politically motivated or strategically timed could further erode public confidence in the electoral system.
It stressed that Nigerians expect INEC to operate strictly within the bounds of the law, maintaining absolute independence and avoiding any appearance of bias.
According to the party, the current situation demands a high level of institutional integrity, transparency, and restraint from all democratic stakeholders.
It urged INEC to refrain from steps that may be interpreted as attempts to manage public perception rather than directly addressing the substantive issues fueling national debate.
“Trust in electoral institutions is too critical to be compromised by avoidable controversies,” the party emphasized, adding that credibility remains the cornerstone of democratic legitimacy.
The ADC also highlighted its own growing national relevance, pointing to increased public interest in its activities and internal processes. It described this momentum as a reflection of Nigerians’ search for credible alternative political platforms.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic ideals, the party called on its members nationwide to remain law-abiding, focused, and actively engaged in the democratic process, even as the political landscape continues to evolve.
