The House of Representatives of Nigeria has expressed concern over reports alleging that security operatives deployed tear gas on protesters who gathered at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.
In a statement issued Tuesday by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, the lower legislative chamber affirmed that it had received reports of the alleged incident and would seek clarification from relevant authorities.
According to the statement, the protesters had assembled at the National Assembly to voice their opinions on several pressing national issues currently before Parliament.
The House reiterated that the right to peaceful and lawful assembly is enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, describing it as a fundamental pillar of democratic governance and a vital channel for citizen participation in the legislative process.
While acknowledging the constitutional responsibility of security agencies to maintain law and order and to protect lives and property within and around the National Assembly complex, the House stressed that such duties must be carried out with professionalism, restraint and full respect for citizens’ fundamental rights.
The statement disclosed that the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs would engage relevant authorities to conduct a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the alleged use of tear gas. It added that where necessary, the House would invoke its oversight powers to ensure accountability and prevent a recurrence.
The House further reaffirmed its commitment to remain accessible to Nigerians, describing itself as “the People’s House” and assuring citizens that peaceful and lawful engagement with Parliament would always be welcomed.
At the same time, the lawmakers urged protesters to operate within the bounds of the law and avoid actions capable of inciting tension or escalating confrontations.
The House maintained that constructive civic engagement strengthens democracy and pledged to continue promoting an environment where citizens can express their views responsibly and safely.
