The Akwa Ibom State Government has shifted the second term mid-term break for the 2025/2026 academic session to enable pupils and students participate fully in the ongoing nationwide Measles, Rubella (MR) immunisation exercise.
The adjustment was announced by the State Ministry of Education in a notice issued on Tuesday and signed by the Commissioner for Education, Professor Ubong Essien Umoh. According to the notice, the mid-term break earlier fixed for Thursday, February 12 and Friday, February 13, 2026, has been rescheduled to Thursday, February 19 and Friday, February 20, 2026.
The revised dates apply to all public and private primary, secondary and technical schools across the state. The Ministry explained that the decision was taken to ensure that school calendars do not hinder access to the vaccination programme, particularly for school age children.
While acknowledging that the change may cause some inconvenience to school administrators, parents and guardians, the Ministry stressed that the adjustment was unavoidable in view of the fixed timeline for the immunisation exercise and the overriding need to protect public health.
The Ministry urged all school heads, proprietors and relevant stakeholders to take note of the new dates and comply accordingly, reaffirming that the welfare, safety and overall wellbeing of children remain a top priority of the Akwa Ibom State Government.
