A fresh wave of controversy has emerged following an alleged testimony by a prison guard at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, who reportedly described the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, as a man of rare wisdom and leadership qualities.
According to the account circulating online, the guard, identified as Hausa and said to be serving at the Sokoto facility, claimed that repeated personal interactions with Kanu had left a deep impression on him. He reportedly described Kanu as “the wisest man” he had encountered in his lifetime, attributing to him a form of wisdom he likened to divine insight.
The guard was further quoted as saying that conversations with Kanu felt like engaging with “a man far ahead of this generation,” insisting that the IPOB leader did not fit the profile of a criminal but rather that of a visionary and ideological leader. He allegedly concluded that Nigeria was “holding the wrong man in prison.”
The comments, though yet to be officially verified by the Nigerian Correctional Service, have reignited public debate over Kanu’s continued detention and the broader political and legal questions surrounding his case. Supporters of the IPOB leader have seized on the remarks as validation of their long-held belief that Kanu is being unjustly detained for his views, not criminal conduct.
However, government authorities have consistently maintained that Kanu is facing charges related to national security and must answer them through due process. No official response had been issued by prison authorities or security agencies as of the time of filing this report.
The development underscores the deep divisions and strong emotions that continue to trail Kanu’s case, reinforcing calls from various quarters for transparency, adherence to the rule of law, and a political solution to lingering agitations linked to his detention.
