The Chairman of Esit Eket Local Government Council, Hon. Mrs. Uduak Ikot, has called on residents to remain calm and law-abiding following the arrest and arraignment of Princess Godsown Udoito over alleged abusive comments made against the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, on social media platforms.
Princess Udoito was reportedly arrested by operatives of the Nigerian Police Force and subsequently arraigned over accusations of verbal abuse and the use of derogatory expressions directed at the governor. The development triggered public reactions, including protests by some individuals demanding her release.
Reacting to the situation, Hon. Mrs. Ikot cautioned residents, particularly sons and daughters of Esit Eket Local Government Area, against any actions capable of disrupting public peace and order. She warned that unlawful conduct could undermine the prevailing stability of Esit Eket and the wider Akwa Ibom State.
The council chairman strongly condemned the use of abusive language and unguarded expressions against constituted authorities on social media, describing such conduct as unacceptable and counterproductive. However, she acknowledged that the right to agitate, protest, and challenge perceived injustice is constitutionally guaranteed, stressing that these rights must be exercised responsibly and strictly within the confines of the law.
Hon. Mrs. Ikot reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to maintaining peace, public order, and respect for constituted authority, while promoting responsible civic engagement, including the proper use of social media.
She also assured Governor Umo Eno of her unwavering cooperation and that of the Esit Eket Local Government Council in sustaining peace, stability, and good governance across the state.
In a conciliatory appeal, the chairman urged the Nigerian Police Force, prosecuting authorities, and the Ministry of Justice to exercise discretion and consider granting clemency to Princess Godsown Udoito in the interest of peace and social harmony.
