A Malian native healer, popularly described as a marabout, has been arrested for fraud after allegedly collecting €33,500 from football supporters with a promise to secure Mali’s victory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to reports, the suspect convinced a group of supporters that he possessed supernatural powers capable of influencing the outcome of the continental tournament in Mali’s favour. He allegedly assured them that spiritual interventions would guarantee the national team’s triumph at AFCON.
However, the promise unravelled after Mali crashed out of the competition at the quarter-final stage, triggering anger among the contributors who reportedly demanded refunds.
The matter was subsequently reported to the authorities, leading to the arrest of the marabout on charges bordering on fraud and obtaining money under false pretence.
Investigators disclosed that the sum of €33,500 was paid to the suspect over time, with supporters acting on blind faith and desperation for football glory rather than verifiable guarantees.
The arrest has sparked widespread debate in Mali and beyond, reigniting concerns over the exploitation of superstition, desperation, and emotional attachment to football by self-styled spiritualists. It has also served as a cautionary tale on the dangers of mixing sports, belief systems, and financial inducements.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, while legal proceedings are expected to follow in accordance with Malian law.
